Before You Post the Job

Five questions that save you 200 bad applications.

Check before writing a word

  • Could someone internal do this with 90 days of support? (Cheaper, faster, retains someone.)
  • Is this one job or two jobs stapled together? (If the requirements span two departments, it's two.)
  • Do we know the pay range — and is it what the market pays, not what the budget wishes?
  • Can I name the 3 requirements that actually predict success? (Everything else is a preference.)
  • Who decides, and by when? (A req with no decision date collects applications forever.)

The 3 requirements

Everything not on this list goes under “nice to have” — or gets cut.

  • 1)
  • 2)
  • 3)

Reality check

  • If the posting has been up 30+ days with no strong candidates, the problem is the pay, the requirements, or the title. It is almost never the job board.
